Start playing Unity project from Visual Studio [TIP]

If you're like me and use both Visual Studio and Unity, how many times have you accidentally tried to run the game from VS?

Unless you've bought UnityVS, there's a dead simple (and free) way to launch your Unity scene from Visual Studio and get that feeling of warmy goodness from all the seamlessness.

Coding Unity projects in Visual Studio. Yes that's Blackstorm Alpha in the background!

Remember this isn't a way to debug using Visual Studio, you'll have to use the packaged MonoDevelop or buy the above mentioned UnityVS. This just links your Start (Debug on older versions) button in Visual Studio to run your Unity scene.

  • Visual Studio (obviously)
  • Unity (obviously)
  • AutoHotkey

  1. Create a new C# Winforms project called UnitySwitcher (or whatever)
  2. Add the Autohotkey to the project
  3. Set its Copy to output Directory to Copy if newer
  4. Delete form that was added automatically
  5. Update program.cs to
    static void Main()
        System.Diagnostics.Process.Start("launch-unity.ahk"); // new
  6. Add this AutoHotkey script to the project as launch-unity.ahk
    IfWinExist, ahk_class UnityContainerWndClass
        Send ^p ; sends Ctrl+P
        MsgBox, 64, Unity is not open. Please open the project to run from Visual Studio.
  7. Add your existing project to the solution, it should be called Assembly-CSharp-vs.csproj
  8. Ensure UnitySwitcher is set as your startup project
